When it comes to protecting your business from today’s cyber threats, the basics still matter. A lot. According to IBM’s 2023 Cost Of A Data Breach Report, 82% of breaches involved data stored in the cloud — and most could’ve been prevented with simple, foundational safeguards.
That’s where “cyber hygiene” comes in — think of it as your company’s version of daily handwashing. Not glamorous. Not exciting. But absolutely essential. And if you’re skipping the basics, your liability is rising by the day.
Here are four cyber hygiene essentials every business should have on lock:
- Secure Your Network.
Protect sensitive data by encrypting your systems and using a firewall. Your business WiFi should be hidden with a secure SSID and protected by strong passwords. If your team works remotely, they should be connecting through a VPN to prevent unauthorized access.
- Train Your Team.
Your team is either your strongest asset or your weakest link. Set clear policies on strong passwords, MFA, and safe data handling. Most importantly, teach your staff to identify phishing emails and avoid risky downloads. Cyber liability often starts with human error — but it doesn't have to.
- Back Up Your Data.
A breach, ransomware attack, or system crash shouldn’t bring your business to a halt. Regularly back up key files — financials, HR records, operational spreadsheets, databases — and make sure copies are stored off-site or in the cloud. Automate it when possible.
- Limit Access.
If everyone can access everything, you’re inviting disaster. Limit access to only what each team member needs to do their job. Remove former employees immediately and reserve admin privileges for your trusted IT or security partner.
Security Is Worth It
Yes, these steps take time. But they’re far less painful than paying legal fees, fines, or ransom after a breach. You don’t need to be perfect — but you do need to be proactive.
